16. 1:13They called it a shape grammar.

Chapter IThe Rules

The generative code

1. 1:19A shape grammar is a set of rules.
2. 1:22If you see this shape, replace it with that one.
3. 1:25Apply the rule once. Then again. And again.
4. 1:30From one small instruction, a whole world unfolds.

7. 1:41It is a signal. A ratio. A quiet chemical instruction that tells growing cells how to divide, where to align, and when to stop.
8. 1:52Change the ratio, and you change the form.
9. 1:56The rule is invisible. The form is the evidence.

Chapter IISpatial Syntax

Relation over measurement

1. 2:04Now notice what a shape grammar ignores.
2. 2:08It does not care that a line is five inches long.
3. 2:11It cares how parts relate. Where they touch. How they align. How they share the space between them.
4. 2:19This is spatial syntax.
5. 2:22Scale it. Turn it. Mirror it. The relationships survive.
6. 2:28And when the rules are tuned just right, the parts stop looking assembled.
7. 2:33They look as if they were always meant to be together.
8. 2:36That is fitment.

Chapter IIIEmergence

The magic in the blueprint

1. 2:43And now, the most beautiful idea of all.
2. 2:47Draw a square. Then draw another, overlapping the first.
3. 2:52You drew two squares.
4. 2:54But look.
5. 2:56There is a third. You never drew it. No rule contains it.
6. 3:01It emerged.
7. 3:04Stiny's great insight was that a grammar can see it too, and build on it.
8. 3:09Rules can act on shapes that no one ever put there.
9. 3:15Nature has always worked this way.
10. 3:18Place each new seed at one fixed angle from the last: 137.5 degrees.
11. 3:25Miss it by a fraction, and the pattern falls apart.
12. 3:30Hit it exactly, and spirals appear that no one placed.
13. 3:36One ratio in. A masterpiece out.
14. 3:41With a handful of rules, shape grammars have captured the lattices of Chinese windows, the villas of Palladio, and the prairie houses of Frank Lloyd Wright.
15. 3:51And then generated new ones that no architect ever drew.
16. 3:58Now look at a face the same way.
17. 4:01Not as a finished object, but as a computation that is still running.
18. 4:06The genes are the grammar. The hormones, its rules.
19. 4:10The contours. The proportions. The tight fit of one feature against the next.
20. 4:16These are the shapes the grammar is compelled to produce.
21. 4:21Beauty is not forced onto the form.
22. 4:24It emerges from the rules.
